First generation Sierra (mk1), in UK known as a jelly mold Cortina (Taunus for Europe). Produced from 1982 to 1987 in 3 door and 5 door hatchback, as well as a 5 door estate. The first generation Sierra’s are very alike through out the years and no huge changes were made. The RS Cosworth model is of course the most liked and hyped version of the first generation Sierra’s. The Cosworth model pushing 204hp from the factory on low boost, having a 5 speed manual gearbox and being rear wheel drive and having a ridiculously huge rear spoiler (known as whale tail spoiler), it’s no surprise they got a lot of attention since the beginning. They’re the most liked version of the first generation Sierra’s, and it’s well deserved, since the base model mk1 Sierra’s were very boring compared to their sporty turbo version that was available since 1985 to 1987. The first generation Sierra’s always came as rear wheel drive, almost all of them having the 4 cylinder OHC “pinto” engine, ranging from 1.3 to 2 liter. Since 1985 the 2 liter OHC was available as injection (EFI) instead of carbureted. The EFI Sierra’s are often referred to as “iS” since the S trim was often if not always associated with having 2 liter OHC including the injection system. This is the most sought after version if talking about base models, since the engine is capable of pushing well over 300hp with just exterior bolt on modifications. Of course, this is not recommended, but it’s still a great achievement for an engine that’s been around since 1970’s. The Cosworth models YB engine is based on the OHC “pinto” engine, but instead of one camshaft and 8 valves the YB engine is a DOHC (twincam) 16 valve and uses a small 3/4 Garrett turbo up to 0.7 bar boost pressure achieving 204hp.

Second generation Sierra (mk2), in UK they’re often called Sapphire. Produced from 1987 to 1993 in multiple different shapes and trim levels changing through out the years. Engine sizes were from 1.6 liter to 2.9 liter, rear wheel drive and 4×4 drivetrain was also available, as well as automatic and manual transmissions. The four door saloon body type came with mk2 only, starting from 1987. They we’re available in 3 door and 5 door hatchback, 4 door saloon, 5 door estate and 2 door pickup (actual model name is P100, not Sierra). Around 1989 the mk2 got dark taillights instead of the familiar orange taillights and in 1990 the orange front indicators changed to clear ones while the long nose bonnet also changed to short type to allow a front grille between the headlights. Side fender indicators also got changed later on to clear ones, but only in the facelift models. 1987 to 1989 are considered early type, 1990 to 1991 are pre-facelift, and 1991 to 1993 are considered facelift models, since they got all clear indicators and dark taillights, among with new different bumpers, new wavy dashboard instead of the box type, and so on. The Sierra in the picture above is a base model 4 door saloon from 1990, actual trim level being CL, but with few modifications. Front bumper has been changed to Cosworth front bumper, Cosworth front grille, fender side indicators have been changed to facelift clear ones and a RS rear spoiler.
